The Tailless Spell was a powerful Northern Spell that rendered a bewitched merperson unable to grow a tail, and concealed them from all of their abilities, turning them into a human as long they were under this spell.
Overview[]
The spell allowed a bewitched merperson to become bipedal, turning him/her presumably into a regular human being, for while he/she remained under the entire duration of the spell. The spell also prevented a bewitched from returning to their true merperson self once wet, and disabled the use of their magical powers for while he/she remained in their human form. It was unknown whether a bewitched could be considered a true and regular human being, though they showed no apparent discomfort from water dehydration, which was dangerous and potentially even fatal to their true merperson self. Nerissa was the only mermaid known to cast this spell on a fellow merperson.
While unstated, it could possibly give a human-turned merperson their full humanity back; enabling them to not turn back when wet.
All active Moon Pools were the only known type of counter-spell of the Tailless Spell. If a bewitched merperson entered the waters of any active Moon Pool when the Full Moon was still up, their true merperson self and abilities were ultimately restored.
It was possible that the spell was not permanent, and could wear off on its own after the deadline to the spell was met.
The casting of this spell was unknown. It remained unclear whether a merperson was able to cast the spell via their own, raw magical power, or was required to channel the power from the full moon, or any other suitable source of moonlight, similar to the Legs Spell, of which the Tailless Spell was apparently a stronger variation.
History[]
During the late 1990s, this spell was cast by a powerful Northern mermaid, Nerissa on her unnamed at the time merman hatchling son, so he would not grow a tail, shortly before giving him up to be raised on the Australian mainland in the care of a human couple, Rob, and Lauren Blakely.
On May 25, 2013, a fifteen-year-old Zac fell into the waters of the active Moon Pool at the heart of an ancient Mako Island during the Full Moon, breaking his mother's spell that made him tailless, and forming a strong connection with Mako Island.
Trivia[]
- As shown with mermen, when they were under this spell from birth, they preferred human food. When the spell broke on Zac, he started eating large amounts of seafood initially; suggesting it awoke his natural food cravings. Cam noted in Season 2 that Zac used to love hamburgers.
- It's unknown if the spell on Zac was truly broken; considering he underwent the metamorphosis spell instead. Normal merpeople do not gain human forms upon drying off.
