Nate comes up behind her and puts his hands on her shoulders. Will spots this and leaves the shop
Nate: Great set, Bella. You’re making magic out there
Bella: Um thanks
Bella goes to grab her bag
Nate: Can I buy you a coffee?

Nate: It’s a rain check for later, yeah?

Bella runs up to Will
Bella: Will, wait up. How are you?
Will: Okay
Bella: So what did you think?
Will: About what

Bella: I was swimming and I found something, and I thought maybe you’d like it
She hands the fossil to him
Will: Woah
Bella: I know, right? I’ve never seen anything like it

He looks confused

He goes to hand it back to her

Sophie: This is amazing
Will: This is an ancient fossil. A signpost of the past. It was alive millions of years ago. Imagine what the world was like back then

Sophie: Nice shell. Where’d you find it?

Will: Hey, check this out. I looked it up on the net, and that shell is rare. Really rare. Says here it’s only found in the deepest parts of the ocean. Where exactly did you find it?
Bella: Told you. The octopus’ garden!
Will: No really, where?
Bella: It was washed up on the beach
Will: You told me you found it when you were swimming
Bella: Yeah, no, it was on the shore as I was getting out of the water
Will: Where? Mako Island?
A moment of silence
Bella: So, who cares?
Will: I knew it! Anything strange is somehow connected to that place
Bella: I don’t know what you mean
Will: You do. I think you know a lot more about that place than you say. You always seem to be going out there

Cleo: He’s always had a thing about Mako
Bella: I think it’s different this time, he’s completely fired up. I never meant to encourage him, I tried to put him off, I really did
Rikki: Well how many times do we have to tell you? You need to forget about him before it’s too late

Rikki: I’m trying to help her! She’s in over her head

Sophie: How did your training session go?
Will: It didn’t
Sophie: You didn’t train?

Sophie: You’ll have to make up for it tomorrow, we’ve got to you ready for the dive comp
Will: I’ll see how I go
Sophie: How come you’re suddenly so distracted?
Will: I’m not, I’m just interested in other things too
Sophie: Like Bella. Don’t tell me you’re going to let some stupid girl get in the way of your training
Will: Don’t talk about Bella like that. She’s different from other girls. I don’t know what it is exactly
Sophie: I’m just saying, you need to keep your mind set on our goals. You could make it big one day if you just stay focused. That’s what’s important

He takes the shell from her and puts it in the solution

Will: I won’t even mention Mako Island. I promise. Scout’s honour. Not that I was ever a Scout but if I was I would do that funny salute thing to show that I mean it. Come on, it will be fun, I can do fun. Truly

They sit down

They hold hands
Will takes off his shirt and heads to the water
He turns to invite Bella and she shakes him off
Later, Bella is sitting on the rocks and Will runs up
Will: You sure I can’t tempt you into a swim?
Bella: Maybe another time
They lean closer, towards a kiss
Will puts his wet hand on her face
She makes a distressed face
Will: What’s wrong?
Bella: I have to go
She gets up
Will: Wait, what happened?
Bella runs towards the sea
Will follows, and looks at the footprints which disappear
He then looks down at his wet hand

Cleo: Please try not to be so hard on Bella. I mean she is smart enough to keep our secret
Rikki: Yeah, I guess
Sophie walks up
Rikki: Everything okay?
Sophie: Bella gave my brother a shell. An extremely rare, extremely expensive one
Cleo: There’s always weird shells drifting onto the shore, I’m sure it’s nothing special
Sophie: Oh this is special alright, Will’s never seen anything like it. And he knows his stuff, believe me
Rikki: Well, do you want us to have a look? Maybe it’s the kind of thing we’ve seen before
Sophie: Thanks, but I don’t have it with me. Will’s already given it pride of place at his desk. I’m going to get someone to take a look at it
Rikki: Oh I wouldn’t go to all that trouble, that’s silly
Sophie: Oh, Will thinks it's worth a fortune so it would be good to know exactly how much

Cleo: What are you doing?
Rikki: Stopping this from getting any worse than it already is

She picks it up
Then she notices other photographs, notes, diagrams
Will has been researching the shell, and sketching it

Sophie is turning to leave
Cleo: You going home, are you?
Sophie: Uh huh
Cleo: You don’t want to stay and have a coffee with me, do you? I’m at a loose end, and I thought, you and I, we’ve never really had a decent chat
Sophie: About what?
Cleo: Um, you’ve got really nice hair, and I was wondering where you got it done
Sophie: Maybe another time
Cleo: Oh, I forgot to tell you that Rikki said to tell you that you if you wanted some extra cash, you’re welcome to do an hour’s overtime
Sophie: I would, but things to do, you know
Cleo uses her power to make the water jug fall on Sophie
Cleo: I am so sorry
Sophie: Why did you say sorry?
Cleo: Habit! I’m always apologising for things, sorry. There I go again. Hey, why don’t you take a seat and I’ll help you dry off

Rikki is leafing through Will’s notes
He has drawn a diagram with a picture of Bella, the moon and Mako Island
Rikki: Bella, water, Mako, full moon. Soon he’ll be able to write a thesis on mermaids

Sophie: Will!
Rikki hears her and returns the papers to the desk
She runs to hide
Sophie: Will, are you there?
Then she uses her powers to boil the water which contains the shell
Sophie enters
Sophie: Will?
Sophie notices the dusty remains of what used to be the shell
Sophie: What?
She takes the powder and leaves

Rikki and Bella sitting in a booth
Rikki: He’s linked you to your power, you know the jelly thing. There’s notes on Mako Island, the full moon, the whole thing. He’s onto you. We can’t afford to mess around with this. We need to stay away from him, and when I say ‘we’, I mean you
Bella: You and Cleo have boyfriends and both of them know about you being mermaids. Why can’t I?
Rikki: Because he’s practically a stranger
Bella: No, he’s not. Not to me. I get him, we have a connection. He’s not like any other guy I’ve ever met
Rikki: Because he’s probably the only guy ever that hasn’t thrown himself at you. That is all! Don’t mistake your feelings for anything else!
Bella: No, it’s more than that
Rikki: Cleo and I have been covering for your mistakes all day
Bella: Excuse me, I’ve been careful
Rikki: I destroyed the shell

Rikki: Sophie was onto where it came from. Not even scuba divers can get deep enough to find those shells. How are you going to explain that?

Will: Bella
Rikki: (To Bella) This is beyond a joke. I am not covering for you anymore. It’s either him or it’s us
She leaves
Will: Where did you disappear to before? One minute you were there, and the next-
Bella: We need to talk

Will: Okay, talk
Bella: It was really great hanging out with you today
Will: Where did you have to go that you could swim to faster than you could walk?
Bella: Listen, I can’t see you anymore
Will: Why?
Bella: I don’t want to talk about it
Will: How can I make you talk to me? Because I wish you would. There are so many things about you that just don’t add up
Bella: I think you’re reading way too much into this
Will: The only time I’ve ever seen you go into the water, you disappear. I know you’re hiding something from me. And whatever it is, I’m not going to judge you. You can’t run and hide forever. I know this big secret of yours has something to do with water
Bella: No
Will: You’re lying to me
Bella: No!
Will takes her hand
He pours water on her
Bella looks betrayed
Bella: I trusted you
She runs outside and dives into the water
Will runs and dives in after her
He sees her as a mermaid
He is shocked
Cleo’s Bedroom[]
Rikki: Well, it was really close
Cleo: I did try to stall her
Rikki: It’s okay, I fixed it
Cleo: Yeah but even with the shell gone, Will is still a major problem
Rikki: I had a bit of a chat to Bella about that, and I don’t think she’ll be seeing him again
Cleo: We can’t stop her from liking-
Rikki: It had to happen, Cleo! And she finally gets it. The important thing is, he’ll never know about us

Bella: I was nine years old, and we were living in Ireland at the time. My parents were busy so I went exploring. And there was this place
Flashback to Bella as a girl throughout her next lines
Bella: I walked down by the ocean. At the bottom of the cliffs. I felt drawn there, like I was looking for something, only I didn’t know what. There was a cave. I felt so peaceful there, like I belonged. And then, something magical happened. I’m so sorry. I wish I could have told you
Will gets up
Will: What about the others? Cleo and Rikki. Are they?
Bella: No, no
Will: Are you sure?
Bella: Yeah, it’s just me, I’m the only one
Will: But they, they know about you?
Bella: No, you’re the only one that knows. We can keep this between us, right?
Will: I don’t know. I need some time to think things through

Bella is teary
Bella: I know you warned me, and I tried, I really did
Rikki: This is a disaster. He’s going to tell everyone. We’ll end up on display at the Marine Park with Ronnie
Bella: No, he won’t. He only thinks that I’m a mermaid
Rikki: I think he’ll figure it out

Cleo: Thanks, for protecting us
Bella: Please forgive me
Rikki: I guess what’s done is done
Bella: I’ll fix it. I’ll deal with it and you guys won’t have to deal with anything

Cleo: Rikki’s right, I mean, we need to act as normal as possible

Rikki: No! Don’t even think about it! Now go sing

Bella sings the same song as earlier
Will walks in and she skips a couple lines
Will goes to talk to Sophie
Rikki: Great, he’s probably dropping the bombshell as we speak
Bella still singing
Will turns to leave
She stops in the middle of the song and runs off stage
Nate: Bella! What’s going on?
Bella: Will, wait! Listen, this is really
Will: I didn’t tell her. We were just talking about this. Looks like your special shell spontaneously combusted
Bella: Does this mean that you’ve decided to keep my secret?
He nods
Bella: Thank you, thanks. I can get you another shell
Will: Thanks for the offer, but I like the fact that it’s a one of a kind. I’ll catch you later
Cleo’s Bedroom[]
Bella: At least our secret’s safe
Rikki: For now
Bella: No, he won’t change his mind
Rikki: Never say never
Bella: No, no he won’t. He’s a good guy, he’s a really good guy
They grin at her
Bella: Hey, Rikki. That sketch that you saw of me, what was it like?
Rikki: Oh, here we go!
