Lewis empties the thermos of tentacle water and puts it in a cylindrical beaker
He weighs it down with weights
Lewis: 300 mls rises 500 g by eight centimetres
Notes this down
Ms Taylor comes in, Lewis tries to hide the experiment under his jacket
Ms Taylor: Lewis, you know you’re not supposed to be in here before school without supervision
Lewis: Yep, uh just give me one second I’ll be out of your hair
Ms Taylor: What have you got there?
Lewis: This? Oh, it’s nothing, it’s just boring
Ms Taylor spots the water
Ms Taylor: How did you do that?
Lewis: Oh, it’s complicated, I’m not really sure yet
Ms Taylor: It’s incredible. Is this just water? Lewis, I know what you’re up to
Lewis: You do?
Ms Taylor: You’re finally going to hand something in for your media practical
Lewis: Yeah. Yeah. Yeah, that’s it
Cleo spots the water from outside the classroom
Lewis: I’m just- I’m not quite finished yet. I’m just working through a few bugs
Ms Taylor: Well make it quick, you fail this and you fail the subject
Cleo: Lewis! Shouldn’t we be getting ready for history?

Lewis: Yeah. I’ve gotta go, Ms Taylor
Begins packing up as a class files in
Ms Taylor: Sure. I can’t wait to hear all about that project
Lewis: I bet you can’t
Cleo looks angry
Ms Taylor: Alright everyone, get settled and get out your textbooks please

Cleo’s living room

Cleo: What were you thinking?

Lewis: I just wanted to run some tests. Cleo, this anti-gravity water is an important discovery
Cleo: At school in the middle of a science lab?

Lewis: Yes! I want to gauge how powerful this thing is
Cleo: Lewis!
Lewis: Cleo, to defy gravity like that, that takes real energy
Cleo: Lewis
Lewis: You’ve got to think about the engineering applications, renewable energy, transport, batteries
Cleo: (has been repeating) Lewis!
Cleo: That’s magic water from Mako Island. Don’t you think people are going to want to know where that stuff came from?
Lewis: Yep, yes, I’m sorry. You’re right. I guess I’m just getting a bit carried away
Cleo: You want to know what’s going on. We all do, okay? But until we find out, we have to keep this stuff under wraps. Okay?

Rikki: I knew we couldn’t trust Lewis with that water. He just can’t help himself, can he?

Cleo: Okay, he did take it a bit far, but only because he wants to know what makes the Moon Pool water so special. And you know what, he did find out some important stuff
Rikki: Really? Did he find out what makes the water go all crazy?
Cleo: No, not exactly
Rikki: There you go!
Cleo: Rikki, he’s just trying to help
Rikki: Well he’s not. And if he keeps messing around with it, then he’s just going to lead everyone to us
Cleo: I’ve already spoken to him, alright. So please just drop it
Rikki: You seen Bella lately?
Cleo: No, come to think of it, hardly at all. Where’s she been?
Rikki: I’ll give you one guess

Rikki: That’s nice, is that a love song?
Bella: Hey! I was just-
Rikki: Thinking about someone special?
Bella: Maybe. He’s so mysterious. He went diving this morning, really deep
Rikki: You followed him diving?
Bella: Yeah. He’s amazing, he can hold his breath forever underwater, he’s just- well he’s just like us
Rikki: Does he have a tail?
Bella: No, Rikki he does not have a tail
Rikki: Then he’s not like us. Bella, you need to be careful. He cannot know we’re mermaids
Bella: Zane and Lewis know we’re mermaids
Cleo: She’s right, Rikki. Just be careful. Take it slowly, make sure we can trust him

Bella runs to catch up to Will
Bella: Will! Hey!
Will: Hi!
Bella: How’s things?
Will: Okay, I guess
Bella: So I was thinking, next week’s exam week. Maybe we can do some revision together
Will: Yeah, uh, okay. That’d be great
Bella: Okay
Rikki: (looking on from her locker) Taking it slowly, huh?
Cleo: She’ll be fine

Will’s house

Will: So this is my place here
Bella: Wow
Will: It’s an old boat house. My parents thought I needed my own space
Bella: Cool
They go inside
Bella: Huh. Where did you get all this stuff
Will: All over the place. Some from Hawaii, some from the Maldives. Stuff from Mako. Hey, check this out! It’s an imperialis, from off the coast of Kenya. I found that at 20 metres
Bella: Pretty. So do you ever use scuba gear?
Will: What? No, not interested. I like it natural. Just me and the sea
Bella: How do you hold your breath for so long?
Will: Training. You gotta do it everyday
Bella: Well it’s good that you’ve got that thing that helps you get down, as well
Will: The mono-fin?
Bella: Yeah, it really powers you along, doesn’t it? Just like a dolphin
Will: Where have you seen one in action?
Bella: Oh, I don’t know. I must have read about it somewhere, but they’re cool, huh?
Will: Yeah
Bella: So, should we get right down to it?
Will: Huh?
Bella: The revision?
Will: Oh yeah. I normally do my training at this time, but I guess I could miss it for one day
Bella: Oh, well I don’t want to muck up your routine
Will: Are you sure?
Bella: Yeah, we can meet up at the café when you’re done
Will: Sounds good
Bella: Alright. I’ll see you later then
Will: See ya

Lewis: So you told Rikki about the water testing
Cleo: Yes I did
Lewis: Oh! She wants to hurt me now, doesn’t she?
Cleo: Probably. I’d steer clear of her, if I were you. Look I understand you were just trying to help
Lewis: Yeah
Cleo: And Ms Taylor didn’t say anything, so we’re all clear
Ms Taylor walks up to them
Ms Taylor: Lewis, where is that project of yours?

Lewis: Oh, about that, it broke
Ms Taylor: Well I hope you can fix it by tomorrow
Lewis: Sorry I don’t think I can
Ms Taylor: That’s a shame. The practical is worth 60% of your mark
Lewis: How could I forget?
Ms Taylor: Pull out all the stops, Lewis. I think you’re on to something extraordinary there
Cleo gives Lewis a face

Bella enters
Rikki: Wow, Bella. Nice outfit
Bella: Thanks
Rikki: You always wear that when you study?
Bella: Yeah, yeah, it’s nothing, it’s just the usual. You seen Will?
Rikki: Um, no, no I haven’t seen him
Bella: Okay, I can wait

Bella gets out of the water and goes to look in the window
Sophie: Woah, this is awesome, I love what you’ve done with the old shed
Will: Yeah, well it’s taken me a while

Will: Oh, yeah I just
Sophie: You’ve got everything here! Stuff you’ve collected from overseas?
Will: Yeah, you know, school and stuff

Will: Yeah, me too
Sophie: It’s really great to see you. What have you been doing since I’ve been gone?
Bella falls into the water. Splash!
Sophie: What was that?
Will: No idea

Cleo’s bedroom

Rikki: Yep, it’s definitely the weirdest thing I’ve ever seen. It’s almost like it’s actually alive
Cleo: Yeah, well Lewis thinks it could be a whole new source of energy, it just keeps going on forever
Rikki: It’s incredible. I say we trash it
Cleo: What?
Rikki: We can’t have magic water sitting around. Sooner or later someone’s going to figure out what makes it work. So I’ll vaporise it
Cleo: Wait, please. I’ll make sure Lewis dismantles it. I just wish there was some way he could show people, he’s going to fail science now
Rikki: Oh, so he fails one subject. It’s not the end of the world. If this gets out, it is the end of us, am I right?
Cleo: Right
Rikki: Okay, I’ll see you tomorrow

Will: Hey! Sorry about yesterday, I got caught up. You know, training
Bella: Training, is that what you call it?
Will: Call what?

Ms Taylor: If you’re trying to get him an extension, that’s very sweet of you, but it’s impossible. It’s late enough as it is
Cleo: But he’s so clever. As I said, he’s been working really hard. It’s really unfair if he fails
Ms Taylor: Yeah I know, he’s one of my best students. But unless he can prove how he does that experiment, he’s going to have to suffer the consequences

Lewis runs in
Lewis: Cleo? Hi, you said it was urgent. Hello, Ms Taylor. What are you doing here?
Ms Taylor: Relax Lewis. Cleo told me about your shyness
Lewis: My what?
Cleo: You know, how you were too shy to show off your work of art? So Ms Taylor offered to come here and see it in action
Lewis: Have you lost your mind?
Cleo: No! I’ve been telling Ms Taylor how brilliant you are
Ms Taylor: And if it can do everything she says it can, you’ll pass with flying colours. So. Let’s see it in action, shall we?
Ms Taylor goes to remove a weight from the top of the water
Lewis: No, no, no, no, Ms Taylor, stop
It’s too late, she removes a weight. The water floats. Cleo looks smug
Ms Taylor: Amazing. How did you do it?
Lewis: Uh, I’m not really sure
Cleo: Don’t be so modest Lewis
Ms Taylor: You’ve done something to the molecular structure of the water, haven’t you?
Lewis: Uh, well
Ms Taylor: Some realignment of the particles, creating some extra strong surface tension and elasticity?
Lewis: Yeah, yep. Something like that
Ms Taylor: It’s amazing, and you say this is just ordinary H2O is it?
She goes to pour the water from the flask
Lewis: Oh, Ms Taylor, don’t
Ms Taylor: I’m going to do some tests of my own
The water is poured out but it doesn’t float. Lewis looks confused then turns to Cleo, who is using her powers to make the other water float. She grins at him
Lewis: Ms Taylor, thank you so much for coming round. I know that you’re very busy. I will see you tomorrow
Ms Taylor: Yes, and don’t forget your experiment report. I want a detailed explanation before I decide on a final mark
Lewis: Yeah, no, I’ll be glad to bring it
Ms Taylor: Oh and Lewis, try to get over the modesty thing. You could have a bright future ahead of you.
Ms Taylor leaves
Cleo lets the water down
Cleo: Phew
Lewis looks a bit run down
Cleo: Hey! Aren’t you going to thank me?
Lewis looks put out

Rikki’s café

Will: Can I have a word?
Rikki: Oh, well, what word would you like? Cheater, user? How about my favourite? Bye!
Rikki walks off
Will: Look, I don’t know what you’re talking about, I just want to know where Bella is
Rikki: Just leave her alone
Will: I’m heading out to Mako in a bit, but we’re supposed to hook up after that
Rikki: You know what? You are unbelievable!
Will leaves
Rikki goes to follow him

Cleo: And, the moon pool water is in here
Lewis: So the cylinder was just full of plain old, boring water? And it was moving because you were doing-

Lewis: Oh, Cleo, you had me totally freaking out
Cleo: I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to scare you! Hey, look on the bright side, you’re going to pass!
Lewis: Am I? Cleo, what am I going to do? Ms Taylor is after a full scientific report. All the theory on why this thing works, with nothing but water
Cleo: Well, she seemed to have a theory
Lewis: But I didn’t understand one word she said. I am in so much trouble
Cleo: I’m sorry Lewis, I did bad, didn’t I?
Lewis: What, no? You risked yourself to get me a pass. I’m lucky to have someone that cares that much
Cleo: What are you going to do?
Lewis: There’s only one thing I can do. I’m going to tell her that this was a scam. I’m gonna make her something else
Cleo: Do you really think she’s going to buy that?
Lewis: She’s the one with the beaker full of plain water
Cleo: But it’s due tomorrow
Lewis: Yeah, it’s fine. I’ll do an all-nighter. I’ll think of something. It’s not going to be brilliant marks, but at least I’ll get a pass

Rikki: I’ve been hassling you about being careful, but it’s only because I know what it’s like to fall for someone dangerous

Bella: You know what, I’m going to say something
Rikki: Wait
