Pluto was Cleo's pet fish, who died. Cleo was very heartbroken and devastated over his death and held a funeral for Pluto on her jetty, and dropped him back into the ocean. Rikki tried to replace Pluto with a freshwater fish, not knowing that Cleo only collects saltwater fish; Rikki figured a new fish would help take away the pain from Cleo losing Pluto, who she had talked to while he swam in the tank. This led Rikki to find new saltwater fish from the ocean for Cleo, to show that although she doesn't understand the affection Cleo can have for her fish, she still understands that Cleo cares for her fish somehow. Cleo named her new fish Hotstuff in Rikki's honor. According to Cleo, Pluto was somewhat “loud” for a fish, being friends with most of the other fish in the tank (Cleo notes that Hotstuff the new fish is “quieter” than Pluto was).
