Ondina And Her Students

Merpeople School is where hatchlings go to learn how to master their powers, learn spell-casting and potion-making and swim properly through ocean currents.

Description[]

According to Sirena, mermaids can come and go from mermaid school as they please.[1] The teacher are older mermaids with much experience, able to teach hatchlings how to master all of their powers until they are deemed ready to possess a Moon Ring, and able to attend the Full Moon Ceremony, marking the conclusion of their Mermaid school studies and being fully initiated into their pods.

Graduation from mermaid school and the bestowing of Moon Rings may not occur until well into a mermaid's teen years.

In mermaid school, information is not written down, but is instead taught through telling stories.[1]

Curriculum[]

Students swim with dolphins and study corals and magic spells.[1]

Hatchlings are also taught the Moon Spell Control, and are also taught about the power of the Moon Rings.

Unknown to the Mako Pod's Mermaid Council, Ondina taught her hatchling students to walk on land while she was a temporary teacher, which is strictly forbidden in every pod.

In the Mako Pod, students are also taught about the sea nettles.[2]

In the Eastern Pod, mermaids are taught the Turn the Tide spell when they are hatchlings.

There are also special classes for mermaids who are already in possession of a Moon Ring, such as on enlargement, the Neutralizing Potion, the Knowledge Transference Spell and the Healing Potion.

In the Northern Pod, students presumably learned how to prepare basic recipes such as Arctic Marshmallow, a sweet, tart candy, and a Moisturizing Lotion that rejuvenates the skin. They also learned how to cast powerful spells such as the Transmutation Spell, a powerful spell capable of altering something's physical form, and the Northern Shrinking Spell which they would use to trap sharks in ice prisons as part of the Merpeople School curriculum.

History[]

Rita Santos was a brilliant student at Mako's school and was the top of her class.[3] She helped Nixie, Lyla and Sirena to master their powers, and gave them Moon Rings.

Ondina temporarily became a teacher in the Mako Pod's school and taught them the basic of magic, like creating a water ball. She also taught them how to walk on land. Rita later became the permanent teacher after Ondina retired, retiring from her own job as a principal at a land school, and impressed the hatchlings by turning Moon Water into fireworks.

Trivia[]

  • In "Recipe for Success", Weilan claims to know nothing about mermaid school, to the extent that she would be flunking every lesson. In "Turning the Tide", she claims that mermaids of the Eastern Pod are taught the Turn the Tide technique when they are hatchlings. This inconsistency may be explained by her having been told by her grandmother than the technique used to be taught in mermaid school before the Eastern Pod disbanded, or that this technique was taught outside of conventional mermaid school.
