Merpeople Powers are powers and abilities that all mermaids and mermen possess granted to them by the specific Moon Pools around the world.
Overview[]
If a regular person comes into the Moon Pool when the Full Moon passes over, they will be transformed into a mermaid or merman. When two or more people enters, the Moon Pool grants them individual powers as it chooses, but if only one enters, they gain all the powers. Mermaids and mermen native from the sea are born with all powers, the regular and weather ones. When mermaids and mermen left the pods that they were born, their powers become linked with a specific Moon Pool when they are accepted as part of their new pod. It is also known that if a human being somehow absorb Moon Water, they will receive special powers inherent of a true mermaid or merman whilst in their system.
During a rare planetary alignment, the moon will increase the water-affiliated powers of any human-metamorphosed-merperson, granting them weather powers if they are in the waters of any active Moon Pool during the event.
The seventh full moon cycle in the life of a hatchling or a human that recently went through metamorphosis causes sudden escalations of merman powers, deepening their connection with the specific Moon Pool that metamorphosed them and gave them their magical powers, even more. It is also known that this cycle would repeat itself on them each time their abilities would be restored, if they were previously stripped, like when the Tailless Spell would be broken on them.
Also, human-turned merpeople are susceptible to the Full Moon's special events on a Moon Pool, like the temporary twelve-hours Lunar Eclipse or the dangerous power-stripping Moon of Fifty Years. A water dragon is also capable of breathing cold, blue flames from its jaws, which has dangerous unmetamorphosing effects on a merperson once burned. There is no cure nor counter-spell of the Water Dragon's cold fire, though. Once his or her old/new human self is fixed, it is impossible for a power-stripped merperson to get their powers and abilities back. The Dragon's cold fire is the only known magic that can strip a sea-born merperson's powers and abilities, and is still unknown if they are completely immune to all of the Full Moon's special events on a Moon Pool, unlike their human-turned counterparts who are known to be susceptible to all of them.
Regular Powers[]
The Regular Powers are the water-based powers, linked to water in a variety of ways. These powers are basic powers that all merperson have, both of human-turned merpeople and sea-born merpeople. The most common are three original powers granted by the Moon Pool at the heart of Mako Island: Hydrokinesis, Hydro-Thermokinesis and Hydro-Cryokinesis, represents three states of water: solid, liquid, gas.
Hydrokinesis[]

- Main article: Hydrokinesis
Hydrokinesis is the power to create, control, and manipulate liquid water or all things that contain water at will. Hydrokinesis has been used to float water in the air or spray it in the form of a jet blast. One can also control water and mold it into any shape they desire. It's also used to mold water into a multitude of shapes, ranging from simple water balls to a miniature mermaid figurine and three-headed snakes. Hydrokinesis also allows the user to multiply the water molecules, making the shape of the water to grow more and expand in size, despite the small amount in a glass to begin with. Hydrokinesis is one of the most common and most versatile powers possessed by sea-born merpeople.
Hydro-Cryokinesis[]

Hydro-Cryokinesis is the power to freeze water or anything containing liquid, ranging from human body to the water molecules in the air. It can also be used to raise or lower cold water temperatures at will. This ability can cause things to become brittle enough to break, such as an electronic lock. It can also be used to render people immobile by freezing only their wet clothing. Mixed with Hydrokinesis, this power can create ice balls which can be used to attack humans and other merpeople alike.
Hydro-Thermokinesis[]

Hydro-Thermokinesis is the power to heat and boil the water or anything containing liquid at will. This power is most useful when the merpeople need to dry off their tails faster, which triggers Limited Transformation back into human form in only a few minutes. It's the most volatile and dangerous of all three original powers granted by the Moon Pool at the heart of Mako Island. Throughout the series, it was shown that this power could easily get out of control. A Full Moon could cause this power to spin out of control, causing everything a merperson touched to instantly dehydrate and ignite, demonstrating some aspect of Pyrokinesis. However, it only lasted when the Full Moon was up, and this ability was gone when the Full Moon set.
Gelidkinesis[]

- Main article: Gelidkinesis
Gelidkinesis is the power to turn water and all things that contain water into a jelly-like compound. The only known user of this power is Isabella Hartley, who received this power from the Sea Caves of Ireland. A merperson using it also shows the ability to change its viscosity, such as Bella making jelly to catch Cleo's fish, and turn the water into a viscous compound. This power is also can easily get out of control. In "Queen for a Day", Bella's allergic reaction affected her mermaid powers, which caused her powers to be channeled through sneezing. Every liquid present in that same room was affected by this ability.
Substanciakinesis[]

- Main article: Substanciakinesis
Substanciakinesis is the power to harden water into a substance similar to glass or crystal, rendering it nearly indestructible, unlike ice that would eventually melt away or break. With this power, merpeople can create a hardened surface atop water that is strong enough to support their body weight. The only known user of this power is Isabella Hartley, who received this power from the Sea Caves of Ireland. It was also shown that if Bella wants, the water will return to its normal state after a few seconds, but if she will not, the water will forever be rigid.
Weather Powers[]
The Weather Powers, also known as the Elemental Powers, are the powers to manipulate the weather and elements in various ways. During a rare Planetary Alignment, the Full Moon will increase the water-affiliated powers of any human-turned merperson, granting them weather powers if they are in the waters of any active Moon Pool during the event. Mermaids and mermen native from the sea are born with most all powers, including the weather powers.
Aerokinesis[]

Aerokinesis is the power to control wind and air. It's the amplified version of Hydrokinesis that merpeople receives in the Moon Pool during a planetary alignment. With this power, a merperson can create the wind in a variety of ways, from light winds to huge hurricanes. The winds created can be strong enough to levitate beings or objects in mid-air. The exact usage of this power may vary and is seemingly dependent upon the knowledge and skill of the user. It can be guessed that Aerokinesis can be amplified to Atmokinesis.
Atmokinesis[]

- Main article: Atmokinesis
Atmokinesis is the power that all natural born merpeople have. It is the ability to control the weather, particularly storms. With this weather power, a merperson can change and manipulate the various aspects of weather at will. The range and strength of this power depend on the users using it. A merperson can take control of another merperson's storm and use it against them, as well as also can dissipate such stormy weather to form clear skies as well. Atmokinesis also can be used to create the effect of Aerokinesis and Electrokinesis, the powers to summon wind gusts, as well the power to summon a lightning from the sky.
Combined Atmokinesis[]

This is a supremely powerful combined ability that only Cleo Sertori, Emma Gilbert and Rikki Chadwick have been shown to possess. When two or more different human beings come into the active Moon Pool during a Full Moon, they are each metamorphosed into a merperson and each of them is granted one individual power which can be enhanced during a special planetary alignment in the Moon Pool, granting them weather powers, allowing them later to collectively alter the aspects of a weather. When tho or more mermaids or mermen combine their powers of air and wind, ice and snow, and lightning and electricity grants them complete control over the weather and its various elemental aspects.
Cryokinesis[]

Cryokinesis is the power to freeze anything without the presence of liquid water and make it snow. Despite this, a merperson doesn't have control over ice or anything related. It's the amplified version of Hydro-Cryokinesis that merpeople receives in the Moon Pool during a planetary alignment. Cryokinesis is known to be a common power for Northern merpeople, as they had been stated to use their powers to trap sharks in ice prisons.
Electrokinesis[]

Electrokinesis is the ability to create, control and manipulate electricity and lightning. It can be used to summon a lightning from the sky or anywhere. Merpeople can cause explosions in electronic devices that depends on electricity, like cellphones. It's the amplified version of Hydro-Thermokinesis that merpeople receive in the Moon Pool during a planetary alignment, as well one of the most dangerous powers a merperson possess.
Pyrokinesis[]

- Main article: Pyrokinesis
Pyrokinesis is the power to start and put out fires. The fire created can burn even over water. Despite this, a merperson doesn't have control over it. It's the amplified version of Hydro-Thermokinesis that merpeople receives in the Moon Pool during a planetary alignment. Pyrokinesis is one of the most dangerous elemental powers a merperson possess. This power is also can easily get out of control. In "Queen for a Day", when Rikki sneezes, her mermaid powers are also affected, causing her to start a fire on top of a picture of her, Cleo, and Bella.
Thermokinesis[]

- Main article: Thermokinesis
Thermokinesis is the ability to heat anything without the presence of liquid water, and to raise the temperature of the air molecules around an object and person. It can be guessed that this power is an amplified version of Hydro-Thermokinesis. This power only appears several times in a vague way, not officially mentioned on the TV series of "H2O: Just Add Water", "H2O: Mermaid Adventures", and "Mako: Island of Secrets".
Other Merpeople Powers[]
Merpeople possess some or all of regular powers and weather powers, but were also shown to have certain additional unique powers that were dependent on upon one's own level of skill, innate ability, lineage, region and linked with a specific Moon Pool.
Essence Manipulation[]

Essence Manipulation is the power to manipulate an object's or person's essence. To take the essence, one only has touch the object or person. Mimmi demonstrated that power when she took Evie's Essence and tried to remove her newly acquired mermaid tail.
Invisibility[]

- Main article: Invisibility
Invisibility is the power that all natural merpeople are shown to have. It allows them to stay invisible for a while, and it's only temporary. The user puts their hand in a fist motion and turns invisible. It remains unknown if only sea-born merfolk can become invisible, or if it's a power also shared by those who came into a Moon Pool under the Full Moon.
Invisibility Detection[]

Invisibility Detection is the power to see invisible merpeople. It remains unknown if only sea-born merfolk can become invisible, or if this is a power also shared by those who came into a Moon Pool under the Full Moon. Neverthless, Rita Santos and Zac Blakely were the only ones to display this power (the latter did while wielding the Trident).
Limited Transformation[]

- Main article: Limited Transformation
It's the counter-spell of the Legs Spell. Just a one drop can change them into their true selves. Ten seconds after touching water, they will revert back to their true forms. All clothing, including tops and accessories are absorbed by the merperson and vanish during their transformation which only reappear when they're dry. Only Moon Rings remain in both forms as they are magical themselves. Humans who have changed into merpeople possess this power since their first transformation. Since merpeople native from the sea do not have legs, they can cast the Legs Spell with the Full Moon or a Moon Ring. In "H2O: Mermaid Adventures", mermaids transform by being enveloped in colored light.
Precognition[]
Precognition is the power to see the future, through visions and predictions. With this power, one can see how events might turn out. White Mermaid saw the thieves coming to steal her treasure before they even learned of her location and she knew about the danger Stanley Finch posed before he even came to Dolphin City.
Siren Singing[]
- Main article: Siren Singing
Siren Singing is the ability that allows a Siren to put a boy or man into an irresistible, hypnotic trance in which he will follow her around. Some mermaids have this ability, however, it is not possessed by all of them. The Moon Spell can grant it to a mermaid that once were a human while they are under its influence. Unlike popular belief, mermen are unable to sing enchanted songs, and only Sirens have this ability, and, just like Zoolingualism, this ability can't be learned and only mermaids native from the sea have it.
Speed-Swimming[]

- Main article: Speed-Swimming
Speed-Swimming is one of the most used merpeople abilities in "H2O: Just Add Water" and "Mako: Island of Secrets". It allows them to swim at the speed of 600 km/h. Their body is encased in bubbles and use it as a jet stream to swim faster. This power is mostly used for racing other merpeople or escaping from boats and other merpeople. It is also used to get somewhere faster if they're upset, angry or are just doing it for fun.
Telekinesis[]

Telekinesis is the power to move objects and people with the mind, often in ways not visible to the naked eye. With this power, the user can levitate objects and people, hold an object or person in place, pull objects and people towards the user, push objects and people away from the user, and alter an object or person's directional course.
Telepathy[]

Telepathy is the ability to communicate without the use of any known human senses. With this power, one can contact another person mentally, without fear that someone overhears the conversation. The White Mermaid could enter the dreams of other mermaids to inform them of her visions and predictions. However she could communicate with them when the mermaids were awake as seen when she told the girls where the galleon was.
Volume Reduction[]

Volume Reduction is the ability to shrink objects. The hand motion for this power is to use the thumb and index finger and move up and down with the fingers. The first time we see the Merpeople using this power is in "Sirena's Secret". Zac uses this power to improve Carly and Cam's vocal cords, while the mermaids used it to shrink lemons and Sirena's vocal cords. Rita mentions that it can be extremely useful to a mermaid caught in a cave-in or in an encounter with a killer whale. This power may be linked to water pressure.
Vision Sharing[]

- Main article: Vision Sharing
Vision Sharing is to see what another merperson is seeing. This power is unique to Mimmi and Zac and is possibly only shared between siblings. Throughout Season 2 and through Season 3, Mimmi and Zac has been able to see what each other see at certain times.
Tower of Light[]

Tower of Light is seemingly a tower of energized Moon Water made from the Moon Pool. A Tower of Light can be used to repel a comet. When the Moon Pool was destroyed, Cleo, Rikki, and Bella devised a plan to recreate the Tower of Light using their mermaid powers. They can create a Tower of Light by combining Hydrokinesis, Hydro-Thermokinesis, Gelidkinesis and Substanciakinesis.
Zoolingualism[]

- Main article: Zoolingualism
Zoolingualism is the unique ability to understand and speak the language of sea creatures, such as dolphins and whales. Some merpeople native from the sea are born with this ability, and it is not known whether this ability can be learned, though it is unlikely.
