Mermaid Council

Mako's current Mermaid Council, with Veridia as its head.

The Mermaid Council was a group of three wiser, elder mermaid members of their respective pods that were in charge of governing of all of its members. They made and dictated the laws and rules the pod had to abide by. They possessed the power to give a mermaid a new Moon Ring if the previous was lost or was given to another mermaid.

They were also responsible for punishing members of their respective pods via banishing them, resulting in the mermaid or merman being outcast, or they could lift their banishment, welcoming them again if the conditions of their return were met. The leader of the Mermaid Council is known as the "Head".

History[]

Pre-Series[]

Prior to the late 1990s, Weilan's Grandmother joined the Eastern Pod's Mermaid Council as one of its elders, presumably the head, before the Eastern Pod was destroyed by the Water Dragon's cold fire.

At some point, around the late 1990s or 1980s, Veridia became the head of the Mako Pod's Mermaid Council.

Throughout the Series[]

On May 26th, 2013, Mako's Mermaid Council made the decision for the Mako Pod to leave Mako Island and banish Lyla, Nixie, and Sirena from the pod after they allowed a tailless Northern merman named Zac Blakely to fall into the waters of Mako's active moon pool, even though it was later proven to not be their fault.

During the summer of 2013, after the Mako Pod left the waters around Mako to join another pod in the South Pacific, a mermaid named Aquata tried repeatedly to convince Mako's Mermaid Council that she was worthy of another Moon Ring after she had given hers to her younger sister, Sirena. She was also able to convince the Council to lift Sirena's banishment and she could look out for her.

On December 17th, 2013, Sirena meets with Mako's Mermaid Council and tries to convince them that Zac is not a threat, but she is not able to convince them.

In early February, 2014, Ondina meets with Mako's Mermaid Council and convinces them to give them more time to try to find a way to make Zac human again.

On May, 2014, after Zac saved all of the mermaids from being drained of their magic in the Merman Chamber, at Rita's grotto, Veridia praised him for his heroic actions, and makes Evie an honorary members of the pod and gives Evie her own Moon Ring.

Later that year, on July 12th, 2014, Mako's Mermaid Council casts the Storm Spell by entering Mako's active Moon Pool and using their own Moon Rings to unleash the full power of Mako in order to defeat the Water Dragon Nerissa. On the following day, Veridia gives Weilan a Moon Ring as a parting gift and to thank her for her help in protecting the pod.

Trivia[]

  • Two mermaids native from the Mako Pod, Aquata and Rita Santos respectively, were given second Moon Rings by the Mermaid Council after they'd gave their owns to close relatives.
  • Before mermen were banished to land, this Council might had been referred to as "Merpeople Council", and might had consisted of mermen as well.
  • If the Mako Pod would have failed against a cursed Nerissa in "The Way of the Dragon", Mimmi and Ondina would have become the next generation of the elders of Mako's Mermaid Council, as arranged by Veridia herself. However, the two later decided to join the pod in the sea in their fight against a cursed Nerissa, and would have shared their fate, had it not been for Zac and Weilan's own pre-arranged, failed plan to try and destroy the dragon in Mako's Moon Pool, which ultimately led to Evie McLaren being permanently reverted back as a human being again, and forced to give up her Moon Ring to the Mako's Mermaid Council as a result.
