Linking was a term that described a magical binding connection between two or more living life-forms or physical elements. Linking can vary in forms and with the type of magic used, but will generally establish a bond between these elements and the life-forms where the sensations and injury of either will also be inflicted on the other.

Every merperson, be it had turned or native from the sea, was magically linked to the continued existence and physical well-being of the specific Moon Pool of a different pod that served as the source of their metamorphosis, and magical powers, meaning that if it was ever to be deprived of its powerful, magical moon water, mermaids and mermen were to perish and die along with it if the life-link to their source of magic was not resolved in time.[1]

Human beings that underwent a certain "metamorphosis" were given a special relation with the specific Moon Pool itself that turned them, and were susceptible to all of its effects, except its partial destruction.[2]

It was also known that during the seventh lunar cycle in the lifetime of a natural-born or a recently human-turned merman hatchling, their magical powers and connection to the specific Moon Pool that served as the source of their magical powers was to escalate to a greater level of strength than before, although to what extent it was unclear.[3]

Despite its almost mystical and devastating effect on a merperson, there still existed some few various evasive ways to erase one's connection and life-link to a specific Moon Pool that served as the source of their magic, and prevent one's fate if the destruction of the Moon Pool followed. For example, a life-link could be suppressed via either undergoing unmetamorphosis in an active Moon Pool itself,[4][5] being permanently bewitched by the water dragon's cold breath,[6] and relocating and re-linking oneself to another pod of a different moon pool.[1] It was unknown if the life-link could be permanently outright removed, and what the consequences it would result in.

Trivia[]

  • Despite the destruction of the Moon Pool at the heart of Mako Island by Sophie Benjamin, Ryan Tate, and Zane Bennett in the late 2008, the Mako Pod, Cleo Sertori, Emma Gilbert and Rikki Chadwick (with the exception of Isabella Hartley, who was transformed in another Moon Pool in a set of sea caves at the Irish coast prior to her arrival in Gold Coast) survive it.[2] Between 2009 and 2012, the Moon Pool in Mako Island becomes active and completely repaired, with its magic totally functional again, though how remains a mystery.
    • Despite another destruction of the Mako's Moon Pool in early 2014, while the rest of the Mako Pod are almost killed by the magic of the Merman Chamber, Zac Blakely, who was still not allowed into the pod at the time, and Evie McLaren, who was at the time a human-turned-mermaid and by unknown reasons completely immune, are seemingly unaffected by the Moon Pool being deprived of its powerful, mystical moon water, and survive it. The danger to the pod was removed when Zac sacrificed himself to deactivate the Merman Chamber once and for all, at the cost of his own life which was later restored via the Trident's stone.[1] This means that either human-turned-merpeople were not the subject to the partial destruction of their specific Moon Pools, or the chamber's magic was designed specifically to drain the lives and magic of mermaids that were native from the sea.
