Czynne księżycowe jeziorko w sercu wyspy Mako
“ | We właściwym miejscu i czasie, powstaje magia. | ” |
Księżycowe jeziorko - rzadkie, szczególne jeziorko wypełnione potężną, magiczną księżycową wodą o rzadkiej możliwości przeobrażenia zwykłej ludzkiej istoty w morską osobę podczas pełni księżyca albo innego dowolnego źródła światła księżyca. Było także źródłem mocy.
Human beings that underwent a certain metamorphosis were given a special relation with the Moon Pool itself that turned them, and were susceptible to all of its effects, except its partial destruction.
During full moons, fledgling members of their respective pods were tasked to protect the Moon Pool by the period it was active, while the rest of the pod attended the Full Moon Ceremony instead. The elders of their respective Mermaid Councils were known to send them off in order to fulfill this task, mostly to ward off outsiders or land people from undergoing the metamorphosis. However, a mermaid or merman could become an outcast if they failed to do so.
Story[]
In antiquity before the time of humankind[1], an impact of the celestial object with the Earth created a part of a desolate island, approximately 50kms off the Gold Coast in the north-eastern Australia. It was believed that several of its shards impacted other coastal areas of the world, creating an alternative Moon Pool in a set of sea caves at the Irish coast, and presumably somewhere off the coast of China.
Pre-Series[]
In ancient times, with the creation of Mako Island, the first mystical Moon Pool located at the heart of Mako Island became the magical source of hundreds of Southern mermaids and mermen who took refuge and came to live on its reef. They established their residence on the island's large, shark-infested reefs and still rules over Mako Island, and used the Moon Pool for their rituals.
At some point, a pod of rebellious mermen tried to take over Mako Island from the Mako Pod, and initiated a war in order to achieve their purpose. It was by this time that the Trident was created, and the mermen originally planned to use it to destroy and kill any mermaid who appeared in their way. Armies of mermaids from the five oceans battled with them, however, they almost perished until a merman (that was Zac's ancestor) realized the wrong-doing of their war, and betrayed his fellow pod members and joined the mermaids. They eventually won the war and the Trident was sealed away in the Trident Cave on the island with the orders not ever to unlock it. Afterward, all mermen were considered to be enemies to mermaids worldwide due to this, were exiled from their native pods, and forced to flee, and go through adoption into a foster human family on land by them as hatchlings.
In the early 1700s, an Irish mermaid named Eva used her abilities in the Irish Moon Pool to save the people around her from a comet that was later named after her. After the comet's eventual impact was repelled, she disappeared, and her fate remained unknown.
At some point in 1955, Louise Chatham, Gracie and Julia underwent their metamorphosis together in a Moon Pool located at the heart of Mako Island, each granted with an unidentified individual power over water. Two years later, in 1957, Gracie reverted to her original human self when the Moon of Fifty Years was over the Moon Pool. Later, when she was finally free of her mermaid self and individual, special power, Gracie ended her friendship with Louise and Julia and broke up with her boyfriend Max Hamilton, and ultimately ended her mermaid life once for all.
In late 1990's, a young girl named Isabella Hartley unintentionally underwent her metamorphosis in the Irish Moon Pool at the age of nine, in the same place Eva created the original Tower of Light almost three centuries earlier. Later, she found a blue gem at the bottom of the pool, tied it on a string, and wore it as a necklace.
Through the Series[]
H2O: Just Add Water[]
In 2006, Emma Gilbert, Cleo Sertori, and Rikki Chadwick were in the Moon Pool just as the Full Moon was over it and they unintentionally became mermaids. Months later, they gave up temporarily their powers by being in the Moon Pool under the Lunar Eclipse.
A year later, Charlotte Watsford intentionally became a mermaid after becoming aware of her grandmother's past. However, Charlotte's life as a mermaid didn't last long and during a fight with Emma, Cleo, and Rikki, she was deprived of her tail and her powers were taken by the Moon of Fifty Years, in the same way as her grandmother Gracie fifty years earlier.
In 2009, Isabella Hartley arrives at the Gold Coast when Emma Gilbert left with her family to travel around the world. After meeting Cleo, Rikki, and Lewis, they quickly became friends. However, they had to face a Water Tentacle that was originally believed as an enemy, but later, they discover it only wanted to warn them that the Comet Eva was in its way towards Earth, and its destiny was in the mermaids' hands. Bella discovers what the comet was named after, a mermaid named Eva who created the original Tower of Light that could stop it again. However, Sophie Benjamin, Will's sister, Ryan Tate, a geologist, and Zane Bennett were trying to become wealthy by stealing the crystals from the moon pool. The Moon Pool of Mako Island is destroyed, but despite its destruction, the Mako Pod, Cleo, Emma and Rikki (with the exception of Bella, who was transformed in another Moon Pool) survives it. Cleo, Rikki, and Bella re-create the Tower of Light and repels the Comet Eva. Between 2009 and 2012, the Moon Pool in Mako Island becomes active and completely repaired, with its magic totally functional again, though how remains a mystery.
Mako: Island of Secrets[]
Zac Blakely, a Northern merman falls into the Moon Pool in Mako Island, breaking a spell that was cast by his mother when he was a hatchling. Three mermaids from the Mako Pod, Lyla, Nixie and Sirena were banished from their pod when its Mermaid Council learns about Zac's transformation into a merman and flees Mako Island. They venture onto land, and meet Rita Santos, a mermaid who was banished many years earlier. The mermaids, knowing that if the Trident is brought in the Moon Pool during the Full Moon, it can destroy it again. Cam, Zac's best-friend, became jealous of his abilities and wanting to be a merman, he steals the Trident from Zac in a Full Moon and plans to become a merman and to destroy the Moon Pool at the same time. Fortunately, he failed, and the Moon Pool was saved by Zac and his mermaid friends.
Despite Zac's heroic feats, Mako's Mermaid Council still thinks him is an enemy, and not even Sirena could change the minds of two mermaids of the Mako Pod, Ondina and Mimmi, a Northern mermaid. Lyla and Nixie leave Mako with the rest of the pod searching for a new home, as all of their efforts in trying to remove Zac's powers failed. Sirena is welcomed back into the pod, however, unbeknownst to its Mermaid Council, Ondina and Mimmi obtain legs for the first time, and the latter concoct a potion that amplifies the Full Moon to fifty, thus exactly creating the bottled effects of the Moon of Fifty Years. However, as Zac was never human, the potion doesn't work and instead of him losing his tail, it was Evie, his girlfriend, that was, unintentionally to her, transformed into a mermaid by going after him. After Erik, a merman arrives in the town, the Trident stone was still functional, and he activates the Merman Chamber after the stone takes away Zac's powers. Erik wanted to drain the magical Moon Water from the Moon Pool, thus the life of every mermaid of the Mako Pod, with the exception of Evie, since she was a human-turned mermaid and by unknown reasons completely immune. However, Erik failed to destroy them.
Zac and his girlfriend Evie were followed by the Water Dragon Nerissa to the Moon Pool in Mako Island, where the latter is deprived of her tail and abilities by the cold fire of the creature. Later, Mako's Mermaid Council creates a powerful thunderstorm using their Moon Rings in the same place in an attempt to defeat the cursed Nerissa.
Special Events[]
Any Moon Pool was able to turn any human being that entered its waters into a merperson, when the Full Moon passed over it. It also granted them with specific elemental magical powers, and if someone entered it alone, they would gain all powers as if in a number larger than one, the powers were split among them. It could be presumed that different Moon Pools had different water-affiliated powers to be given. The water in all Moon Pools appeared normal to scientific experiement, but it was a type of magical Moon Water, which contained the power of the moon itself. All active Moon Pools itselves were the only known counter-spells of the Tailless Spell.
Moon Pools were the source of sea-born merpeople's magical elemental abilities since ancient times, and their lives and magic were linked with a specific Moon Pool of a different pod, meaning if it was deprived of its powerful, magical moon water, mermaids and mermen linked to the specific moon pool were to perish and die along with it if the destruction of their source of magic was not resolved in time.
All Moon Pools around the Earth generate different magnetism and effects depending on the moon's phases and the planetary alignments. The known effects are as follows:
- Lunar Eclipse: During a Lunar Eclipse, any merperson who was born human and entered the waters of a moon pool in its active state during the event were to be reverted back into a human being and stripped of their magical powers for a period of twelve hours. After this period, the Eclipse's effects on a bewitched merperson were to wear off on their own, and their powers and true self were to be restored by then.
- Elemental Moon: During a rare planetary alignment, which was implied to refer to the planetary conjunction of Mercury, Venus, and Jupiter[2], the moon increased the water-affiliated powers of any human-metamorphosed-merperson that entered it, granting them elemental powers and the ability to alter and control the state of weather.
- The Moon of Fifty Years: Once at every fifty years, during the planetary conjunction of the entire Solar System with the Earth's Moon, any human-born merperson who entered the waters of a moon pool in its active state was to be permanently reverted into a regular human being, and be stripped of their powers, and it was still unknown if they could undergo metamorphosis again following their fate, though it seemed unlikely. There also existed a powerful potion that could be used to recreate this effect on a bewitched merperson at other times.
- Comet Collision: When a comet entered within range of collision with a Moon Pool on its trajectory, the pool itself underwent changes. The known effects were only proven in the Mako Island Pool, but historical data could suggest similar effects in the Irish Pool. These were as followed:
- A rise in temperature in the air and the water of the Pool and surrounding cave.
- A tentacle generated to warn nearby merpeople of the impending danger.
- The ability to display a projection to merpeople of the events to come in order to warn them.
- The power to magnify the powers of any merperson in order to help divert the course of the comet.
- Seventh Lunar Cycle: During a seventh lunar cycle in the life of a new-born or a recently human-turned merman hatchling, it was believed that a fledgling merman's magical powers and connection to the specific Moon Pool that served as the source of their metamorphosis and magic was amplified to greater, unprecedented levels of strength. It was not known whether this lunar occurrence was truly cyclical, and could be repeated more than once in a fledgling's lifetime.
It was not known if natural-born merpeople were immune to these events, unlike their human-turned counterparts.
List of all known Moon Pools[]

- Sea Caves of Ireland - served as the source of magic for the unknown pod
- Unknown - served as the source of magic for the Eastern Pod
- Unknown - served as the source of magic for the Northern Pod
- Unknown - served as the source of magic for the South Pacific Pod
Trivia[]
- The underwater entrance to the Moon Pool in Mako Island is 6m deep and usually takes 20 seconds for a land person go through it.
- In "Something Fishy", Lewis revealed that the water and everything from the Moon Pool are normal. However, in the spin-off the Moon Water was introduced. It is known if a human absorbs it by some reason, they get powers over water.
- When a merperson is under the Moon Spell, the Moon Pool will return them to normal.
- During Mako: Island of Secrets, Sirena, Nixie, Lyla, Ondina, and Mimmi sleep in Mako's Moon Pool. Weilan later joins them after building a friendship; having always slept on land.
- According to Weilan, Mako Island's Moon Pool is famous among merpeople, even across the globe.[3]
- There, in addition to it, existed a powerful and potent potion that amplified the power of fifty moons, and likely allowed to recreate the dangerous, metamorphosis-reverting magic of the Moon of Fifty Years on a bewitched merperson at other times.[6]
- Bella implies that the Moon Pools call out to those suited to undergo Metamorphosis; having stated that she felt at peace and belonged at the Sea Caves of Ireland, even before gaining the Limited Transformation.
